Software type : AutoCAD 2011
Rename File To : No Files to download.
Open files from Windows.

Frequent tipster Leonid Nemirovsky has a quick AutoCAD tip to share with us.

"If you have a sheet set created and AutoCAD is not open, find the appropriate DST file in Windows Explorer and double-click it; AutoCAD will open with your sheet set loaded."

Notes from Cadalyst Tip Patrol: Windows can open files that have programs associated with their file extensions. If you are in Windows Explorer, double-click a file and the proper program will open that file. If you double-click a DWG file, for example, AutoCAD will open. Sheet sets are saved in a DST file type; double-click one of those and it will open AutoCAD and the Sheet Set Manager.

You can also configure an AutoCAD startup icon to open a certain sheet set file. Useful if you work with a few different sheet sets and you want to open AutoCAD from the shortcut and load the right one. http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?linkID=9240617&id=2894625&siteID=123112

I didn't realize many ever used AutoCAD itself to open 'any' drawing files or drawing sets directly...so perhaps I missed the value of this as a 'tip' on its own, but may I offer a tip outside of AC that allows this tip to be used effectively? Several file managing apps are available that exceed by far the usefulness of Windows-own file manager to locate and organize your project files. Since all of our project drawings MUST be saved and edited from our file server, from within the appropriate trade folder or xref folder of the project # directory: We use the third-party file manager "Total Commander" to create and access our project directory. When working on multiple projects residing on company file server(s), it is much more efficient to use Total Commander to browse directly to the intended drawing .dwg file or drawing set .dst file, and double-click to open.
