Control which properties are transferred when using Matchprop.

Mike Demers sends us a tip on fine-tuning the settings of the Match Properties command in AutoCAD.

"This tool is easy to miss, since you are prompted for the Settings option after you select your first object. The Match Properties command is a very effective way to change an object’s properties by copying another object’s properties. It is also great for isolating (matching only the properties you want, such as layer, color, or linetype).

"Here is the complete method:

  • On the standard toolbar, click Match Properties, or type Matchprop at the Command line.
  • Select the object whose properties you want to copy.
  • If you want to control which properties are transferred, type S at the Command line (for Settings).
  • In the Property Settings dialog box, clear the items that you do not want copied (all are on by default).
  • Select OK.
  • Select the objects to which you want to apply the selected properties and press Enter."

Notes from Cadalyst Tip Patrol: The Match Properties command is a great tool for controlling the properties of your objects, and it's very easy to use. You can use it on one or more objects. It keeps you from having to switch active layers or manually change the objects once they are drawn.

Check out the setting options; they might give you better control over what you are doing. You have to start the Match Properties command and select the base object before you can get to the Settings Manager. You will find that many commands have a "hidden" settings option available once the command is started; just read the prompts on the Command line.
