This tip will show you how to change the state of a locked/released item in Autodesk Vault without having to change the revision.

Editor's note: Keep in mind, if using this tip, that modifying a drawing without bumping the revision number can result in more than one "current" version of that drawing.

Do you have an item in Vault that is locked, but you need to make a change that does not need a revision (like a title or description change)? This tip will show you how to change the state of a locked/released item without having to change the revision.

  • Find the item you want to change, right-click, and select Change State.

  • Set to Work In Progress and make sure the check Skip Revision Bump. Note the Lock is removed from the item.

  • Make the changes you need to make. Right-click and select Change State. Set to desired Lifecycle State.

  • Your item has been changed without changing the revision.

This tip is DANGEROUS and must be withdrawn. I worked as a doorknob designer for 27 years and then taught mechanical design for 13 years. One of the things I emphasized to my students is that ANY revision, no matter how minor, MUST have a new revision level. If not you have two different “current” versions and could end up with 63,248 parts that don’t fit. You don’t want to know how I know that number…
