Mirror objects without flipping their text backward.

Mary E. Kipp sends us a tip about a text setting in AutoCAD that will enable you to mirror objects without mirroring their text — or to flip the text backward, if you choose.

"Do you need to mirror objects with text? Make sure that your MirrText setting is at zero. Simply type in MirrText at the Command line, then change the setting so that the text will not be mirrored along with the object."

Notes from Cadalyst Tip Patrol:
Why would you want your text to be displayed backwards? Who knows why anyone does anything the way they do it in AutoCAD — but if you want your text to be displayed backward, you can make it happen with the system variable MirrText. A setting of zero (0) turns it off, meaning that it will not flip your text. Set it to one (1) and it will flip your text backward. Leonardo da Vinci wrote his notes backward to make it more difficult for others to steal his work; I bet he would have appreciated this setting!

The real question is why would the default setting be to actually mirror the text. The one or two times in a lifetime that you would actually use this does not justify having the program mirror text out of the box. Since you probably will never change this setting it is helpful to reprint this tip every so often so you can remember the command to change it to a useful setting

As a reply to geisert, phil, I'd say that it depends on what type of work you do. Those who design printed circuit boards for example do want the text to be mirrored. But if you don't like the standard, go change the variable's value in your template drawing (if you do not use templates, then AutoCAD uses one named ACAD) and you won't have to worry anymore about it
