This tipster types all his text on the first line at the prompt, then goes to the text editor.

Jason Youngblood writes, “When I would type text for leaders, I never knew how wide to make the Mtext. I would just leave it at <0> and then start typing my text. I would type a few words, Return, type a few more words, Return, type a few more words, Return, and so on. Then, if my text didn't fit where I needed it to go, I would have to go into the text editor and fix it. Even worse, I might have to change the note to say something totally different.

“The trick I learned was to just type all my text on the first line at the prompt, then go to the text editor after I was done and drag those neat little <>'s at the top over to where the width of my text fit comfortably in the space that was needed. Now I don't have all of those returns in my text to deal with and if I need to edit the wording of my note it all still magically fits where I wanted it.”

NOTES FROM CADALYST TIP PATROL: I would agree. I prefer to use this method myself. Sometimes you still need to use a Return, and that’s ok to mix and match. If you feel you know how wide to make your text, go ahead and enter a width. You can always go back and change it later. You can also edit the width by grip editing the text. Grab a grip and move it to the side you want.

Like the old "Layer Lock" lisp routine I have. Whoever wrote years back said it came from Microstation.
