Use a background mask or hatch to make white text visible when printed.

Frequent tipster Leonid Nemirovsky and his coworker Dave Allison give us two methods for printing white text on a black background in AutoCAD.

"To make a sign similar to the JPG below while working in AutoCAD, you can use one of two methods.

"When your black background with white lettering is a simple rectangle, as shown here, use this method: For the letter coloring, I use Truecolor 255,255,255 and an Mtext Background Mask option using the Pantone Process Black C color. Expand the text area to fit the rectangle.

"In a case where the black background is much more complicated, I use the same colors for the text, but for masking I use a solid hatch Pantone Process Black C to fill in the area. Use Draw Order to place the black hatch behind the white text."

Notes from Cadalyst Tip Patrol: There is no way to print in white, because printers don't have white ink or toner. Areas that are "printed" in white in AutoCAD are actually not printed at all; their color comes from the paper they are printed on. To get white text to show up on paper, you have to surround it with some other color, such as black. You can use the Background Mask option built into text, or use other objects, like hatching, as a background color.

I have found that to plot white text it is much simpler to use color 252 screened to 5%. You don't have to surround your text or hatch and mask with a different color
