When working in AutoCAD, if you need to insert a hatch in an area that isn’t completely closed, this tip may solve that issue. The command for this is called Gap Tolerance. It resides in the Hatch command menu, as highlighted in red below. The value can be set from 0 to 5,000! It may take a bit of experimenting to find the right value for your hatching requirements. Bonus tip: The Hatchtoback command sends all hatches to the back. Also useful is Texttofront.

Notes from Cadalyst tip reviewer R.K. McSwain: You can set a default value for the hatch gap tolerance by setting the system variable HPGAPTOL. Either way, you are telling AutoCAD the maximum size of gap that can be ignored when objects are used as a hatch boundary. The default value, 0, specifies that the objects must enclose the area with no gaps.
