Use the improved Join command to combine lines that are not co-linear.

Mechanical engineer Perry Pattiz shares a tip on joining lines and polylines in AutoCAD.

"A few years ago AutoCAD introduced the Join command, which allows you to select several back-to-back lines in a straight row to combine them into a single line. Quite by accident, I found out that the Join command has been improved in release 2012 to work with lines that are not co-linear. It turns them into a contiguous polyline, with all of the capabilities that the polyline type possesses. You can also use the Join command to join polylines together, avoiding the multiple steps of starting the PEdit command, creating polylines, then selecting them to join together in a single entity."

Notes from Cadalyst Tip Reviewer Brian Benton: Joining lines, and other objects, has become much easier in recent releases of AutoCAD. The software will even join arcs together, or arcs and lines, or arcs and polylines — you get the idea.

For those with older versions that don't have that Polyline-joining capability in the Join command, or don't have Join at all, you can use the attached PolylineJoin.lsp with its PJ command. It's not exactly like Join in that it won't turn collinear contiguous Lines into one Line [it will turn them into a multi-segment Polyline], but it will join all viable object types that are contiguous end-to-end into Polylines. It may be a little different from Join in this: if ONE object is selected, it will join ALL viable objects contiguous to it and to each other [no need to select them] into one Polyline; if more than one, it will join them all into as many Polylines as needed, without including any un-selected objects. See further comments at the top of the file. [I plan to submit this separately, so it may eventually have its own Tip number.]
