This routine allows you to define a temporary line to which you can extend other entities.

This is a nice little routine from Alan Thompson that adds more flexibility to AutoCAD's Extend command. It allows you to define a temporary line to which you can extend other entities. When you are done, the temporary line is erased. Start by loading the LISP file, then type in the command EXX. Pick two points to define a line, then the regular Extend command will start, using the temporary line as the extend boundary.
