If you have ever wanted to add a parts list to a drawing without having to select a view to base the parts list on, this tip is for you.

Have you ever wanted to add a parts list to a drawing without having to select a view to base the parts list on? This tip will show you how to achieve this. It also allows you to set your parts list based on a level of detail.

Start a new drawing from the Place Views ribbon, and select Parts List.

In the Parts List dialog box, select "Browse for file" (circled in red).

Find and select the assembly or part you want the parts list for. If you want to base this on a level of detail, select the Options button.

Select the design representation you want, and place the parts list on the drawing. I use this to place a parts list even if I have a view place. That way I can base my parts list on the level of detail I desire.
