Add Symbols to Dimensions

Use quick codes to add symbols into dimensions.
Related CAD Tips

Koby Maxwell offered this quick tip: "When needing to add symbols into dimensions, it is efficient to know the quick codes for those most used. Open Properties for the dimension, scroll down to Text Override, and type the following:

    * almost equal symbol: U+2248
    * centerline symbol: U+2104
    * squared symbol: U+00B2
    * cubed symbol: U+00B3

"Don't forget to type <> to keep the relative dimension."

NOTES FROM CADALYST TIP PATROL: Good tip, Koby! While in the Mtext Editor, you can also right-click and choose Symbols. A list of these ANSI codes will appear. This tip works as far back as AutoCAD 2002, which is not as robust, but will provide access to the Windows Character Map by selecting Character / Symbol / Other.

Control construction notes dynamically from one location without using an external reference.
Related CAD Tips

Ron Brees sent "Control Construction Notes with Sheet Set Manager," a PDF tutorial for AutoCAD 2006 and later versions to control construction notes dynamically from one location without using an external reference.

NOTES FROM CADALYST TIP PATROL:
The Sheet Set Manager is one of the best additions to AutoCAD since paper space. The ability to add to and control notes for drawings of particular sheet sets is an excellent alternative to using xrefs to accomplish the same task. This procedure is more than just a tip. It should be considered for a tutorial addition to the next release of AutoCAD.

Copy Nested Objects

Use the Ncopy command to copy an object or part of an object from an xref into your current drawing without having to open the xref.
Related CAD Tips

Honei Hooper wrote to offer this AutoCAD tip: "The Ncopy command can be used to easily copy an object or part of an object from an xref into your current drawing without having to open the xref. Just type Ncopy, and you will be prompted to select the nested objects you wish to copy. Select the object(s) or pieces of an object you wish to copy and hit Enter. You will then be prompted for a base point and you then can insert the object(s) wherever you need it on your drawing. Please note that this does not create a new block from the copied object(s)."

NOTES FROM CADALYST TIP PATROL:
This is an Express Tools command that saves a lot of time. Right-clicking on this xref shows a drop-down menu that provides an option to open the xref (provided the multiple document interface is set). Thanks, Honei!

Quick Leader Attach

Tip saves time with future editing of already completed drawings
Related CAD Tips

John Damman sent this tip, which he uses for AutoCAD Land Desktop 2007, though it also works in vanilla AutoCAD 2007 and later. "The routine to grip, copy, then hold the Shift key works for additional quickleaders for labeling multiple like objects. This works for multiple copies. Or you can use Qlattach (quick leader attach) to attach the new leader to the text of the first quick leader mtext so that when the label needs to be relocated, all of the leaders follow.

"Qlattach even works if the leader is to label an object in the opposite direction. Merely draw the quick leader without a tail, then use Qlattach in the same manner. The new leader gains a tail and moves to the beginning of the mtext of the original quickleader. Then move the tail end to the other end of the mtext. This leader will move with the others. The routine to grip, copy, and then hold the Shift key works again in this position as well, and Qlattach should be employed again. All the new leaders move with the mtext."

NOTES FROM CADALYST TIP PATROL: Good tip! It will definitely save time with future editing of already completed drawings.

Follow-Up: Quick Leader Attach
As an alternative to the original  tip, Michael Grutter sent LEADER_NONE.LSP, which works with all versions since AutoCAD 2000. "To create a new quick leader, pick the arrowhead location first, then pick a location anywhere in the drawing. You're prompted to select the annotation to attach to the new leader. You will jump to the insert of the annotation based on its justification setting.

"This is also a viable alternative to the Mleader option in AutoCAD 2008 and later if you are using leaders for annotation and not balloon callouts. Note that this routine still uses the Qlattach command from Express Tools, which needs to be loaded regardless of which method you choose. The header of the AutoLISP file has a defun line to add to your ACAD.LSP or ACADDOC.LSP file."

Zoom to VMAX

Categories : Zoom
Software type : AutoCAD

VMAX will zoom you to the outer most coordinates that have been used in a file.
Related CAD Tips

Allen Jessup sent us a tip on using the Zoom command.  This is a nice function of the Zoom command hasn't been documented since the R12 manual. After initiating the Zoom command at the command line enter V for Vmax. This will cause AutoCAD to zoom out to the maximum area possible without a regeneration. In other words this will zoom you to the extents of your virtual screen. The virtual screen is the area of the drawing (database) coordinates that AutoCAD keeps the conversion to screen (pixel) coordinates in memory. Zooming out past this limit forces AutoCAD to re-compute the screen coordinates forcing a Regen.

Notes from Cadalyst Tip Patrol:  VMAX will zoom you to the outer most coordinates that have been used in a file.  It is different from Zoom Extents.  Zoom Extents will zoom out to where your further most objects are.
