Check the settings before using the LayTrans command.

Maria Tzanetakou gives us an AutoCAD tip to try when using the LayTrans command to translate layer settings from one file to another.

"When using the LayTrans command, remember to check the Settings dialog box beforehand. For example, let’s say that we have a drawing A and that we want to change the layer colors and the layer transparency to be the same as in drawing B. To do so, click on the Settings dialog box, and uncheck 'Force object linetype to bylayer,' but leave all the other choices checked. If you don't remember to do this, all object linetypes will be set to 'linetype = bylayer.' The same thing will happen if you don't want to change your object's color and the 'Force object color to bylayer' option is on (checked)."

Notes from Cadalyst Tip Patrol:
AutoCAD tools can be very useful in getting menial or difficult tasks done quickly. However, sometimes the automation can have unintended consequences for a user. In the case of LayTrans, it is set by default to translate your objects to ByLayer. This could break your model if you drew anything to a specific color or linetype.

Usually it is good CAD practice to draw everything ByLayer, but there are certain times when you want to override an object’s layer settings. If a command has settings options, check them out. It may add more functionality to the tool that you didn’t know was there.
